Easter Tradition in Travemünde

Easter in Germany is a very visible Celebration. You can find Easter eggs nearly in every front yard, hanging on trees, lying under bushes, hidden in hedges. Decorating windows and door entrances. Easter is a very loved celebration in Germany and in the rest of Europe.

Easter decorations are so colorful and bright, it is a real wonderful welcome to spring and life. In the Christian church it is the celebration for the rising of Christ, but most of the traditions are still celebrated on the Imbolc Festival which was the original one before it was made to a Christian festivity.

You can see that not only with the decorations directed to spring, colorful flowers and life but also that in many places there are Easter fires. Something like a huge pyre or bonfire on the beaches or on meadows. At the Imbolc Festival there are dances and young people jump over the fire, music and singing.

The one I was at Travemünde was not that ‘impressive’. Just a big bonfire on the beach and many, many people to look at it and taking smartphone selfies. Some strange disco-like music accompanying the whole. I was there with a friend, maybe expecting something ‘wow’, and we left after maybe 5 minutes.

But I liked very much the decorations in the front yards walking through the streets, decorations made by children and hanged at the windows, Easter bunnies sitting in the window sills offering colorful eggs, hidden eggs in hedges and under bushes.

Easter is a wonderful time and every year I am looking forward to it. I wish you all a

HAPPY SPRING!
