A Country House Restaurant outside Ascoli Piceno

With a friend from Ireland I was a few weeks ago in Ascoli Piceno. He wanted to climb up a mountain (Monte Vettore) and I would have a look around in Ascoli and surroundings.

For the night we found a wonderful Agriturismo (farm stay) just outside the center of the city.

In the evening we could not eat in the b&b (exceptional because normally it is always possible) but the owner recommended a restaurant nearby: B&B Country House San Giorgio at Rosara

Rosara is the next village and just a few minutes drive up the hill. One can walk though easily but this evening it was raining cats and dogs. So I preferred to drive and not to get wet.

The name of the restaurant – Country House – was not really saying anything to me. But it should be a total surprise. From outside it reminded me an old Roman country house. Entering the house has a wow-effect. Colorful walls, very rustic and the same a touch of elegance, old charm. The entrance is painted with green, the second dining-room where we took our seats was with red. Like in an old castle the red room.
An open fire place, old paintings of noble ladies at the walls, fine table clothes. OMG, it will be very expensive! But wait.

When we asked for the menu the owner told us there is no menu. He gives just ‘assaggi’ (treats). Intriguing!

Because I told him I don’t eat any flour, dairy or sugar he came up with alternatives for me. My friend got the full ‘treatment’. Don’t ask me what exactly we had but it was a lot (4-5) of antipasti like stuffed olives, cold meat, mushrooms and similar, a plate of pasta with truffle-creme-sauce, some stew, some perfect roast-beef and a dessert. A bottle of red wine and one of water.

The restaurant was not fully packed but had another table with two and another with 8 people (on a Sunday night).

The owner knows English as well and told us that his wife is cooking and he is serving. For events, in summer and other fully days he will have help by family members as well.

When it came to pay we had another surprise: 25 € each! That is such a great value. We were fully satisfied, got some amaro (bitter) to try (and take as much as we wanted as we had the bottles on the table) after eating and had a perfect dinner.

In summer I saw there are tables outside under the olive trees. On their website you can see they offer as well some rooms for a stay. I think perfect as well for a hiking holiday as there is the Monte Sibillini National Park nearby.
