I can say I have seen many things and honestly I expected something very unusual for this Christmas while I am in the United States. But when we were driving around to see some Christmas lights my mouth just dropped open and I was literally without words. I have never ever seen or imagined something like this.
To decorate the front yard of any house or garden is very normal for Christmas. I have seen it all over in Europe. Some lights in the windows, lights on Christmas trees in the garden or even other trees if there is no natural growing conifer. Sometimes a snowman or Santa, angels or lights hanging down the roof.. there are many ways to decorate a front yard. But usually there are just a few of these many possibilities.
In San Diego I found ALL possibilities in ONE front yard at many homes. Lights over lights, inflatable Santa, snowmen and all kinds of Christmas figures and not (Star Wars figures are a popular addition I saw). Oftentimes you pass the yards and music is playing. And then we saw the ones where even we could have cookies and something to drink! Partytime…
What impressed me most was that there are even tour buses to show these displays. I wanted to know if these Christmas decorated front yards are in competition… they are not. It is just for fun, to show it’s Christmas time. Like many things in the United States it is .. a bit much … for a European taste. Or maybe only for me…. anyway, I am again completely surprised of this country.
