Driving around in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The sun is shining, it’s nearly warm, summer feeling coming around the corner. That was my day in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a Northern region of the east German part. Only a few kilometers far from Lübeck I have been today to sightseeing in Wismar. The little city is situated at the Baltic Sea and more than worth to have a look at.

Just outside the beautiful Hanseatic League town there is a nature so beautiful in this period of the year that it would be a shame not to chaise around and have a look at little villages and all the wild flowers on endless fields.

A friend of mine and me were in the morning time to have a great sightseeing tour in Wismar’s old city center. But for the afternoon we decided to go to two other places nearby: Timmendorf and Kirchdorf.

We passed first through Kirchdorf where we had a short stop to take some pictures. A very small port with a few fisher boats, a few restaurants and a lot of housings just for tourists. For the rest the village is a village with a lot of farm houses.

I loved the view from the ‘bridge’ to the island because Kirchdorf and Timmendorf are situated on an island just north from Wismar and only a few kilometers outside. Sea birds like geese and swans, a lot of horses on fields and on the nearby horizon Wismar with the two towers of St. Mary’s church and the bell of St. George’s church. Nearby the two chimneys with white steam of a timber manufactory.

Through little house groups and a lot of fields with horses on we arrive in the little place called Timmendorf. Here there is a big – and it seems to be a very nice and well managed – camp ground with all facilities needed.

We park our car right on the parking of the camp ground and walk down to the little port. Here are a lot of sailboats, some fisher boats and an infinite view on the sea. We see Wismar, Boltenhagen and Grömitz as well which is just on the opposite side of Travemünde. So pretty far away.

The sailor – a cog – coming in to Wismar port is arriving from Lübeck with tourists.

We have lunch sitting in the sun, enjoying the view and the sounds of port and nature. A dog looking to other dogs coming here too is all the time alerted to tell every newcomer that he was the first to find the place.

We opted for fresh fish with potatoes and a nice salad.

The lighthouse near the restaurant seemed to be a symbol of the place.

We had also a short look to the beach with people lying in the sun and sand. But for my taste it was freezing cold for the beach. And bathing… no thank you!

We headed back to Wismar, had a cappuccino in the harbor which is full of sailboats and big fisher boats. My friend had to talk to the port manager so I used the time for more sunbathing.

The way home we decided to take the roads through the hinterland. So more villages, more fields, more flowers to photograph. The first poppies came out and I just waited to have them on my cam.

We had a stop at Boltenhagen. Here there is a long pier into the water, very nice. The beach had still a few people playing and taking the last sun rays. I saw someone in the water.

This statue look so amazed into the far away horizon that I thought she has the same wish as me: going into the world and see and experience everything.

At a concert place we stopped to chat a little bit and see if the people working on stage here are starting a concert. They did but too late for us.

The nearly last stop was at a Bothmer Palace. It was just a case we saw the sign and I turned left on the parking place. Unfortunately this really beautiful palace is now closed and in restoration. But there will be a guided tour through the works next month and we will go if possible.

Shortly before Lübeck we saw a farm offering organic vegetables and more. We had our last stop for today and shop nice goats cheese, apple wine and some veggies. The farm is called Hof Hoher Schönberg. Very recommended for every one who likes clean food. They have even fresh pressed oils of flax seeds, nuts, homemade cheese, jam, milk milked by hand and from free grazing goats and cows and much more.

It was a great day out, unexpected and full of surprises. Hope for more days like this!
