Coffee Grounds in the Mouth – Arabic Coffee

In Jordan I tried the Arabic style coffee which is similar to the Greek and Turkish coffee.

At home I don’t prepare anymore so often my mocha or espresso but when I am out I still like sometimes a cappuccino or espresso. So in Jordan of course I couldn’t resist to try the typical coffee which is brewed directly in a pot and very different to the Italian style coffee.

The Dallah – so called the typical coffee pot once the Bedouins used and now is common to the Arabic culture – looks a little funny and is seen as a symbol for Bedouins and their life style. We saw them everywhere: in restaurants, in Bedouin tents and in hotels.

Typical for their hospitality and after meals there is offered a cup of coffee. But also in the streets together with the choice of tea, mainly black tea and served with some leaves of mint.

In a Souq in Amman we have seen how they sale this most particular coffee: half a kilo of roasted coffee beans and two handful of fresh cardamom are ground together and filled in a box or bag. The mixture is stored at home and used as wanted. The longer the cardamom stays together with the coffee the more the coffee gets its special taste.

I took always a coffee during my journey through Jordan and liked it a lot. It has a smooth taste with just a light cardamom taste. I know this way of coffee with cinnamon as well from Greece and already liked it a lot. Turkey serves this way of coffee-making without anything special but already cooked with sugar. That is the difference between Saudi style and Turkish style coffee.

When I had my first coffee in Greece long time ago I didn’t know how they made the coffee and had my coffee like the Italian one: to the last drop. That was a horrible way to learn that Arabic or Turkish style coffee is never drunk to the end as the coffee grounds remain on the bottom.

Often in these countries old women read the future out of the remaining coffee powder after turning the cup upside down on the plate. Don’t give money for this service, just smile 😀

Cardamom is good for the stomach, helps digestion and is great against infections. And the taste in the coffee is really great!

Hope you will enjoy the Arabic coffee!
