Be Vegan – in Volterra, Tuscany

It was a complete surprise – and a very welcomed! Of course I had a look before leaving for Tuscany where to find some vegan restaurants but more in Pisa than elsewhere. Italy is very easy to find something great to eat for every vegetarian and also vegan. The Italian cuisine is full of nice vegetable dishes, pizza and pasta. All vegan and vegetarian. But anyway I was curious what would a vegan restaurant be in Italy.

When walking through that wonderful little medieval city of Volterra suddenly my friend made me notice a restaurant-sign in a small, narrow side-street: “Organic Food” it said.

As my friend has to eat gluten-free and me no grain at all we decided to give it a try. It was too busy at lunchtime so we came back a little later and found a place on the outside terrace in the street. Just a few tables outside, a few inside, typical medieval style and very cozy.

The menu is various, pasta without gluten (made with buckwheat) and the prices are good.

We took a starter of vegetables and for second a pasta with tomato sauce and a risotto with beetroot.

Both we tried the dish of the other one as well: very tasty! The glass of wine has not been missing of course, a nice white wine from the local area.

We finished our meal with a good cup of espresso – like Italians do. Unfortunately no cake or sweet for us without gluten. Well.. didn’t matter as we were really ‘filled up’.

The restaurant has a surprise in the interior: a glass floor where to see onto ancient walls. It feels a little creepy to walk on glass nearly in the air but also very interesting.

The restaurant makes a very clean impression and the people are very nice. The food is all organic, freshly made (so don’t expect your orders in one minute to arrive) and coming from local farmers.

As restaurant I really recommend this one in Volterra. Don’t miss it!
