A Tiny Church with Great Paintings – San Giovanni Battista in Gradara

When I visited the little fortified town of Gradara I had as well a look into the churches. I always go into churches as they give often peaceful moments, a shelter when it’s cold or too hot and they have mainly amazing artworks.

In this case I happened in the main church of Gradara: the church San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist). It is not much I found about the tiny but impressive church. There is no date of when it was built but historians presume long before 1290. The first documented act is a request of restoration in 1297. So being in decline the church could have already a few hundred of years.

I loved the colors of the paintings and clearly it was restored recently. Red is the main color and the ceiling with four saints in the vault is really beautiful. Me and my friend were alone in the church, the candles lit and it had a wonderful atmosphere.

Do you like to go into churches when you are visiting a place? They are so varied everywhere and even if they are from the same period and religion people or cultures have different interpretations. I like for example the Northern German churches with bright colors, mainly white and green. The San Giovanni Battista church in Gradara is not overloaded like many churches in Italy but simple and beautiful. It was worth to seek for some shelter of the cold..
