A Slavic Castle and a Schnitzel

On a sunny Saturday in Northern Germany we were looking for a place to have lunch. And as we were in the area of Eutin we decided to go there. It was already late, around 3 pm, which for Germany oftentimes means: the kitchen is closed for lunch. In Eutin main square we were lucky and found some restaurants still open to serve lunch.

Eutin is a little town in Schleswig-Holstein in the so called ‘Holsteinische Schweiz’ (Holstein Switzerland). It’s a hilly area with a lot of lakes and forests, beautiful in summer time. The ‘mountain’ Bungsberg is incredible 168 m high! There are over 20 lakes embedded in a green landscape.

Eutin is of Slavic origin and already around the 8th century AD there was a castle or fortress on one of the islands in the Eutin Lake. In Eutin Carl-Maria von Weber was born, a famous German composer.

The four-winged Eutin Castle today is an event location I have been a few times for Christmas or Easter markets. Internationally famous are the Eutiner Festspiele (Eutin Opera Summer Festival) as well as the Blues Festival in the main square, the Market place.

We were in Eutin only a couple of hours. Sitting in the warm afternoon sun and having a nice salad (me) and a typical German Schnitzel (my sweetie) we enjoyed the view on an antique car exhibition in the market place. Later we had a walk to the Eutin Castle and were sitting there under rose bushes and listening to some Blues players.

Eutin is always a nice place to come and relax.
