50 Cats And a Friend

I do have a great friend living in Denmark. She has a kind of hotel for cats. Means: people with a kitty at home can ‘park’ the cat at my friends pension during vacation. That is a great idea but means also a lot of work for my friend. Her home practically is a cats home.

Well, one day I wanted to see her and the cats.. and Denmark where I have never been before. And I wanted to say thanks for her big help when I was loosing my own cat. She was a great help in advice and morally.

So I took the car heading north towards Flensburg and straight into the heart of Denmark. She told me exactly which way to take. It was a very sunny day, perfect for the trip. The roads empty and no difficulty at all to find my way through a new country.

I arrived in the early afternoon at her house. It was the first time we met personally and we had immediately a good feeling together. Her daughter was nice as well and her husband very kind. We all have other things in common: the photography for example. So there were a few things on the list to see these days I stayed in their house.

First of all: Viborg. The nearest town to their place. So one afternoon her husband and her daughter had a walk into town with me doing some sight seeing.

The town has a long story. Viborg is situated in Jutland, exactly in the region Midtjylland. It’s the second largest Danish municipality and one of the oldest cities in the country. The Vikings settled here already in the late 8th century. One there was also a mote-and-bailly-type castle, long time ago now. The name Viborg means ”holy hill”.

One of the most interesting places is the cathedral. It was constructed in the 12th century for over 50 years before being consecrated. In its long life it was burnt down several times and re-built always again. The Danish painter Joakim Skovgaard decorated the church. There is also a museum of the painter nearby I haven’t visited. Unfortunately the 5 monasteries and the many churches when Viborg was still Catholic there is nothing anymore to see about.

We walked the streets, lined by ancient houses in red copper stones. Very suggestive and very Nordic I would say. We could see the cathedral from far away as it is situated on a hill and widely seen.

Meanwhile we walked down to the water’s edge. There is a nice park where walking, jogging, sitting on the lawn is really great. We saw a few water birds and walked along the shore. We saw a lot of stylish houses, modern the ones, old and Aristocratic the others. Surrounded by a beautiful and peaceful nature.

Before going home we had a ride down to the sea side. We saw a tiny nice harbor, a beautiful nature again. Of course very flat and nothing that could seem even a hill or more a mountain. But it is very intriguing and a temptation to a lot of photography. I was already curious what else they wanted to show me the following days…
